Bray family to 1565; then Sir Lewis Dyve (d. 1592) who built the house. Sold 1708 by Lewis Dyve to Sir Thomas Trevor (d. 1730), created Baron Trevor in 1712. Passed 1764 to Robert Trevor who assumed the name of |Hampden - Viscount Hampden 1776. Thomas Trevor Hampden (d. 1824); passed to George Rice Rice. VCH Bedfordshire.

Acquired by John Ventris in 1560. Probably built by Sir Francis Ventris (d. 1627). Passed to John Field in 1743. Sir Charles Ventris Field sold to Sir George Osborne ca. 1800. VCH Bedfordshire.

Remodelled ca. 1780 in the French chateau style. Rebuilt by 1st Earl de Grey, Baron Lucas. In the Grey family from medieval times to 1859 when passed to Philip Weddel. Old house demolished. VCH Bedfordshire. Neale's Views, I, 1818. English Heritage. Thomas Grey, Earl de Grey (d. 1859). Assuned name of Weddel in in 1803. The Greys of Ruthin go back to the 14 cent. as Earls of Kent. J.B.
