RISLEY, a parish in the hundred of STODDEN, county of BEDFORD, 5¼ miles (S. W. by W.) from Kimbolton, containing 790 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Bedford, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £8. 7. 6., and in the patronage of Lord St. John. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists, and a Moravian establishment. A fair is held on Shrove Tuesday. Near Melchburne House, the seat of Lord St. John, are the remains of the old castle from which the family derive their title.

The church of All Saints is a noble edifice of stone, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, a large south aisle of almost the same width as the nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of Perpendicular date, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells rehung in May, 1891, and a striking clock: the church was restored and an organ chamber built in 1891, and it will now seat about 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1569.
