Thanks to the foresight of the Drakes in preventing the railway being built through the bottom of the Misbourne valley, the old town of Amersham is still recognisable today from the descriptions from over 200 years ago. The High Street has been spared destruction by through traffic thanks to a 1990 by-pass, and the only eyesore on the skyline is the tower of the nurses' home in Amersham Hospital on the site of the former Union workhouse. The 3 main pubs are still in business, two of them featuring in 'that' seduction scene in the hit movie 'Four weddings and a funeral'. The room with the 4-poster bed at the Crown has been booked solid ever since! The member of Parliament for Amersham and Chesham in early 1997 is a woman, which could have made the post-election rituals interesting, had they been retained.
