Geographical and Historical information from the year 1750.

[Transcribed information from Stephen Whatley's Gazetteer of England - 1750]
(unless otherwise stated)

"GAMLINGAY, (Cambridgeshire) is a pretty large village, near Caxton, Biggleswade, and E. Hatley, and in the road from Cambridge to Oxford, which was the manor and seat of the Avenells, whose inheritance descended by marriage to the ancient family of St. George. 'Tis now the seat of Sir Jacob Gerrard Downing, Bt. Here is a ch. sc. supported by the subscriptions of the neighbouring gentry and of Merton Coll. and an old hos. erected by the family of Jacob."
