It was founded in 1304.

Church History

An ancient parish church, originally serving the township of Sale, and the greater part of the township of Ashton upon Mersey.

The district was affected by the following boundary changes:

  • 1856 September 30 — reduced when the township of Sale was transferred to Sale: St. Anne.
  • 1893 August 26 — extended to include the remainder of the township of Ashton upon Mersey from Bowdon: St. Mary.
  • 1894 February 2 — reduced when part of the township of Ashton upon Mersey was transferred to Ashton upon Mersey: St. Mary Magdalene.
