Church History

An ancient parish church, serving part of the City of Chester.

The district was affected by the following boundary changes:

  • 1882 February 17 — enlarged when when the following areas were transferred from Chester: St. Oswald, Chester: St. Bridget and Chester: Holy Trinity: "The district proposed to be separated from the parish of Saint Oswald in the city of Chester and annexed to the parish of Saint Peter in the same city known as Saint Oswald within the Walls is bounded on the north partly by the city walls and partly by the Cathedral Precincts, on the east by the said Cathedral Precincts and the city walls, on the south and west by the parishes of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Peter, by the district of the parish of Holy Trinity hereinafter described, the district of the parish of Saint Martin hereinafter described, and other part of the parish of Saint Martin and the city walls in the said city. The district proposed to be separated from the parish of Saint Martin in the city of Chester and annexed to the parish of Saint Peter in the same city is bounded.on the.north and east by the last-mentioned district of Saint Oswald within the Walls on the west by the centre of Princess-street and the parish of Holy Trinity in the said city. The district proposed to be separated from the parish of Holy Trinity in the city of Chester and annexed to the parish of Saint Peter in the same city is bounded on the north and part of the east sides thereof by the first described district on the remainder of the east by the said parish of Saint Peter on the south by the centre of Watergate-street and on the west by the centre of Trinity-street in the said city"
  • 1960 December 21 — enlarged when an area was transferred from Chester: Holy Trinity (details not available).

In January 1973 the district was amalgamated with Chester: St. John the Baptist, Chester: St. Oswald, Chester: Christ Church, Chester: St. Bridget, Chester: St. Martin, Chester: St. Michael and Chester: St. Olave to create a unified district for the city of Chester.
