CROWTON

"CROWTON, a township in the parish of WEAVERHAM, second division of the hundred of EDDISBURY, county palatine of CHESTER, 5¼ miles (W. by N.) from Northwich, containing 455 inhabitants." [From Samuel Lewis A Topographical Dictionary of England  (1831) ©Mel Lockie]

  • A township in Weaverham ancient parish, Eddisbury hundred (SJ 5873), which became a civil parish in 1866.
  • It includes the hamlets of Bratts Bank, Cooksongreen, Crewood (part), Peck's Brow, Pickerings o'th'Boat and Ruelow.
  • The population of Crowton was 297 in 1801, 466 in 1851, 479 in 1901, 420 in 1951, and 429 in 2001.

Churches

  • Weaverham: St. Mary (Church of England). The ancient parish church for the township of Crowton.
  • Crowton: Christ Church (Church of England). The district church for Crowton from 1872.
  • Crowton, Methodist Chapel (Primitive). Built in 1840, closed in 1976.

  • 1883 March 25 — Lost a detached part to Norley (3 acres, pop. 0 in 1891, including Firwood Moss)
  • 1892 March 25 — Gained the whole of Onston (pop. 78 in 1901)
  • 1988 April 1 — Exchanged parts with Norley
  • 2015 April 1 — Lost part to Norley, and gained parts of Acton Bridge, Cuddington (near Weaverham), Dutton and Norley.
