Church History
Built in 1889 as a chapel to Dukinfield: St. John the Evangelist, becoming the district church for part of the township of Dukinfield in 1906. The boundaries of "The Consolidated Chapelry of Saint Luke, Dukinfield" were described in the London Gazette on 18 May 1906:
" I. All that portion of the new parish (sometime chapelry district) of Saint John the Evangelist, Dukinfield, in the county of Chester, and in the diocese of Chester, which is bounded upon the south by the consolidated chapelry of Saint Stephen, Flowery Field, Newton, upon the west and upon part of the north by the new parish (sometime district) of Saint Mark, Dukinfield, both in the said county and diocese, and upon the remaining sides, that is to say, upon the remaining part of the north and upon the east, by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the said new parish of Saint Mark, Dukinfield, from the said new parish of Saint John the Evangelist, Dukinfield, at the junction of Crescent-road with Astley-street, anid extending thence north-eastward along the middle of Astley-street for a distance of three chains and a half or thereabout to its junction with Old-road and Cemetery-road, and extending thence first eastward and then south-eastward along the middle of Cemetery-road for a distance of eight chains and a half or thereabouts to its eastern end at the entrance to the Dukinfield Cemetery, and extending thence south-eastward to and along the wall forming the western and southern boundaries of the said cemetery for a distance of nineteen chains and a half or thereabouts to a point on the western side of Wild-street, and extending thence first south-eastward to and then south-westward along the middle of Wild-street for a distance of nine chains or thereabouts to its junction with Town-lane, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of Town-lane for a distance of two chains or thereabouts to its junction with Albert-street, and extending thence south-westward along the middle of Albert-street for a distance of three chains or thereabouts to its junction with Jeffreys-street, and extending thence south-westward in precisely the same direction and in a straight line for a distanced elevon chains or thereabouts to a point in the middle of the footpath leading from Jeffreys-street past the Victoria Colliery to Dewsnap-lane, arid extending thence first southward then south-westward and then again southward along the middle of the said footpath for a distance of thirty chains or thereabouts to its junction with Dewsnap-lane and with the roadway or footpath leading past Devvsnap Farmhouse to the Hyde Junction Iron Works, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of the last-mentioned roadway or footpath for a distance of twenty-two chains and a half or thereabouts to its junction with Johnsonbrook-road, and extending thence eastward along the middle of Johnsonbrook-road for a distance of two chains or thereabouts to its junction with the roadway or footpath leading past the eastern side of the Hyde Junction iron Works towards Newton, and extending thence south-westward along the last-mentioned roadway or footpath for a distance of three chains or thereabouts to the boundary which divides the said new parish of Saint John the Evangelist, Dukinfield, from the said consolidated chapelry of Saint Stephen, Flowery Field, Newton."
"II. And also all that portion of the said new parish of Saint Mark, Dukinfield, which is bounded upon the south-west by the new parish of Audenshaw, in the county of Lancaster and in the diocese of Manchester, upon part of the south-east by the new parish of Saint Anne, Haughton, partly in the said county of Lancaster and partly in the said county of Chester, and wholly in the said diocese of Manchester, and upon the remaining part of the south-east by the said consolidated chapelry of Saint Stephen, Flowery Field, Newton, upon the east by the above-described portion of the said new parish of Saint John the Evangelist, Dukinfield, and upon the remaining side, that is to say, upon the north-west, by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the said new parish of Saint John the Evangelist, Dukinfield, from the said new parish of Saint Mark, Dukinfield, at the junction of Pickford-lane, King-street, and the road leading from King-street to the Dukinfield Cricket Ground, and extending thence south-westward along the middle of the last-mentioned road for a distance of five chains or thereabouts to a point opposite to the middle of the footpath leading to the Dukinfield Collieries, and extending thence south-westward to and along the middle of the last-mentioned footpath for a distance of twenty-one chains or thereabouts to the centre of the bridge which carries the line of the Great Central Railway across such
footpath, and extending thence south-westward and in a straight line (thereby crossing Globelane) for a distance of twenty-chains or thereabouts to the centre of Well Bridge which carries Dunkirk-lane across the Peak Forest Canal, and continuing thence south-westward in precisely the same direction and in a straight line for a distance of twenty-one chains and a half or thereabouts to a point in the middle of the River Tame, upon the boundary which divides the said new parish of Saint Mark, Dukinfield, from the said new parish of Audenshaw."
From 1880 to 1900 the district included the chapel of Dukinfield: St. Matthew .
