HANDFORTH

  • Handforth was a civil parish created in 1877 from part of Handforth cum Bosden.
  • In 1936 the civil parish was abolished to become parts of Wilmslow and Cheadle & Gatley.
  • In 2011 a new civil parish, with different boundaries, was created from part of Wilmslow.
  • The population was 650 in 1851, and 911 in 1901.

Churches

  • Cheadle: St. Mary (Church of England). The ancient parish church for the township of Handforth cum Bosden.
  • Cheadle Hulme: All Saints (Church of England). The district church for part of Handforth cum Bosden from 1868.
  • Handforth: St. Chad (Church of England). Built in 1840 as a chapel to Cheadle: St. Mary. The district church for part of Handforth cum Bosden from 1877.
  • Handforth: St. Benedict (Roman Catholic).
  • Handforth, Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan), Wilmslow Road. Built in 1872.

Historical Geography

  • 1877 December 17 — Created from part of Handforth cum Bosden (1311 acres, pop. 786 in 1881)
  • 1936 April 1 — Abolished and divided between Cheadle & Gatley (231 acres, pop. 93 in 1931) and Wilmslow (1080 acres, pop. 938 in 1931)
  • 2011 April 1 — Re-created from part of Wilmslow.
