NORTH RODE

"RODE (NORTH), a township in the parish of PRESTBURY, hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of CHESTER, 3½ miles (N. E.) from Congleton, containing 262 inhabitants. A school is supported by small annual donations." [From Samuel Lewis A Topographical Dictionary of England  (1831) ©Mel Lockie]

  • North Rode was a township in the ancient parishes of Prestbury and Gawsworth, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 8866), which became a civil parish in 1866.
  • It includes the hamlets of Ethels Green and Rode Heath.
  • The population was 256 in 1801, 277 in 1851, 276 in 1901, 236 in 1951, and 178 in 2001.

  • Prestbury: St. Peter (Church of England). The ancient parish church for the greater part (1502 acres) of the township of North Rode.
  • Gawsworth: St. James (Church of England). The ancient parish church for a small part (64 acres) of the township of North Rode.
  • North Rode: St. Michael (Church of England). The district church for North Rode from 1846.
