Church History

Built in 1903 as a chapel to Weaverham: St. Mary. In 1935 it became a district church for the township of Cuddington and parts of the townships of Oakmere, Over and Weaverham (previously served by Weaverham: St. Mary, Whitegate: St. Mary and Delamere: St. Peter). The boundaries of "The Consolidated Chapelry of Saint John the Evangelist, Sandiway" were described in the London Gazette on 2 April 1935:

"All those contiguous portions of the Parish of Weaverham, of the Parish of Whitegate, and of the Parish of Delamere, all in the County of Chester and in the Diocese of Chester, which taken together are bounded upon all sides by an imaginary line commencing at the point in the middle of Small Brook where the boundaries of the said Parish of Weaverham, of the said Parish of Delamere, and of the New Parish of Christ Church, Crowton, in the said County and Diocese, all meet, and extending thence first south-eastward and then in various directions along the boundary which divides the said Parish of Delamere from the said Parish of Weaverham for a distance of 1 mile and 36 chains or thereabouts to the point where it crosses the middle of tlhe road from Warrington to Tarporley, and extending thence south-westward along the middle of the last mentioned Road for a distance of 45 chains or thereabouts to> its junction with Common Lane, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of Common Lane (thereby crossing the boundary which divides the said Parish of Delamere from the said Parish of Whitegate) for a distance of 25 chains or thereabouts to the point where it is crossed by the boundary of the Northwich Parliamentary County Division, and extending tlhence first eastward and then in various directions along the said Parliamentary County Division Boundary for a distance of 1 mile and 3 chains or thereabouts to the point where it crosses the fence forming the western boundary of Pettypool Wood, and extending thence first northward and then eastward along the said fence for a distance of 10 chains or thereabouts to the point:where it meets the fence forming the western boundary of Pettypool Park,. and extending tlhence northward along the last mentioned fence for a distance of 34 chains or thereabouts to the point where it reaches the southern side of Watling Street upon the boundary which divides the said Parish of Whitegate from the said Parish of Weaverham and extending tlhence first north-eastward and then north-westward along the said boundary for a distance of 2 chains or thereabouts to the point where it crosses the middle of Watling Street, and extending thence north-eastward along the middle of Watling Street (thereby crossing the boundary which divides the said Parish of Weaverham from the said Parish of Whitegate) for a distance of 1½ miles or thereabouts to the point where it is crossed by tihe boundary which divides the said Parish of Weaverham from the New Parish of Saint John, Hartford, in the said County and Diocese, and extending thence northward along the last mentioned boundary for a distance of 30 chains or thereabouts to the point where such boundary diverges north-eastward to the south of Hodge Lane, and extending thence first north-westward to and then first south-westward, then north-westward and then again south-westward along the middle of Hodge Lane for a distance of 1 mile and 10 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Millington Lane, and extending thence westward along the middle of Millington Lane for a distance of 32 chains or thereabouts to its junction with the isaid road leading from Warrington to Tarporley, and extending thence south-westward along the middle, of the last mentioned road for a distance of 11 chains or thereabouts to its junction with the road leading to Cuddington, and extending thence westward along the middle of the last mentioned road for a distance of 43½ chains or thereabouts to its junction with Barrastitch Lane and
Cuddington Lane, and extending thence south-westward along tihe middle of Cuddington Lane for a distance of 49 chains or thereabouts to its junction with the road leading past the
southern side of the park attached to Delamere House towards Norley, and extending thence first north-westward and then westward along the middle of the last mentioned road for a distance of 28 chains or thereabouts to the point where it is crossed by tlhe boundary which divides the said Parish of Weaverham from the said New Parish of Christ Church,
Crowton, and extending thence south-westward along such boundary (thereby following for the most part the middle of Small Brook) for a distance of 35 chains or thereabouts to the
point in the middle of Small Brook where the boundaries of the said Parish of Weaverham, of the said New Parish of Christ Church, Crowton, and of the said Parish of Delamere
all meet, at which point the said imaginary line commenced."
