It was founded in 1879.

Church History

Founded in 1879 as the district church for the township of Higher Walton, and parts of the townships of Acton Grange, Moore and Lower Walton (previously served by Stockton Heath: St. Thomas and Daresbury: All Saints). The boundaries of "The District of Saint John the Evangelist, Walton" were described in the London Gazette on 5 December 1879: 

"All that portion of the parochial chapelry of Daresbury in the parish of Runcorn in the county of Chester and in the diocese of Chester which is bounded on the east partly by the district parish of Stretton and partly by the particular district or new parish of Saint Thomas Stockton Heath both in the county and diocese aforesaid, on the north-east by the last-named particular district or new parish on the north and on the north-west by the county of Lancaster or in other words by the River Mersey, on the west by the new parish of Halton in the said county of Chester and in the diocese of Chester aforesaid, and on the remaining sides that is to say on the south and on the south-west by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the said new parish of Halton from the parochial chapelry of Daresbury aforesaid at or near to the point where Lapwing-lane diverges from the said boundary in an easterly direction and extending thence first eastward and then southward to and along the middle of the said lane for a distance of forty chains or thereabouts to its junction at Moore Turn Bridge over the Mersey and Irwell Canal witli the road leading to Moore and extending thence that is from the said canal bridge south-eastward along the middle of the last-described road for a distance of fifty-eight chains or there-abouts (thereby passing over the lines of London and North Western Railway, and of the Birkenhead and Cheshire Junction Railway) to tlie point on the sonth-easiern side of the last-named line of railway where the said last-described-road joins the road leading from Moore to Higher Walton and extending thence first north-eastward and then south-eastward along the middle of the last-mentioned road for distance of thirty chains or thereabouts to its junction on the southern side of Porch House Farm-house with the road leading over Acton Grange Bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal to Holly Hedge Farm-house and continuing thence that is from the said Porch House Farm-house still south-eastward along the middle of the last-described road for a distance of twenty-seven and a half chains or thereabouts to its junction on the southern side of Holly Hedge Farm-house aforesaid with the turnpike road leading from Frodsham to Warrington and extending thence north-eastward along the middle of the said turnpike-road for a distance of one chain and twenty-five links or thereabouts to its junction with the road leading to Rowswood Farm-house and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of the last-described road for a distance of six chains or thereabouts to the boundary on the western side of the last-named farmhouse which boundary.divides the township of Acton Grange from the township of Walton Superior otherwise called or known as Higher Walton, and extending thence southward along the said township boundary for a distance of forty-two chains or thereabouts to its junction in Row's Wood with the boundary dividing the last-named township from the township of Hatton and extending thence eastward along the last-mentioned township boundary for a distance of forty-ix chains or thereabouts to the boundary in the wood called or known as Bog Rough which boundary divides the said parochial chapelry of Daresbury from the district parish of Stretton aforesaid" 

"And also all that contiguous portion of the particular district or new parish of Saint Thomas Stockton Heath aforesaid which is bounded on the north-east on the north and on the north-west by the county of Lancaster aforesaid or in other words by the River Mersey aforesaid on the south-west on the south and on the south-east by the above-dsceribed portion of the said parochial chapelry of Daresbury and on the remaining side that is to say on the east by an imaginary line commencing at the point in the middle of the stream flowing from the reservoir called or known as the Warrington Reservoir past Walton Mill into the River Mersey where the boundary which divides the said parochial chapelry of Daresbury from the particular district or new parish of Saint Thomas Stockton Heath aforesaid diverges from the said stream in a south-westerly direction such point being a little to the south-east of the- bridge or culvert which carries the turnpike road leading from Frodsham to Warrington as aforesaid over the same stream and extending thence that is from the last-mentioned boundary first north-westward and then northward along miiddle of the said stream for a distance of twenty-four chains or thereabouts (thereby passing under the said turnpike-road and through the mill pond supplying Walton Mill aforesaid and following at the said mill the waste water branch of the same stream and crossing the Mersey and Irwell Canal aforesaid) to the junction of the same stream with the River Mersey aforesaid and continuing thence still northward and in a direct line to the county boundary in the middle of the said river which boundary divides the said county of Chester from the county of Lancaster aforesaid."
