BOLTON, Cumberland - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"BOLTON, a parish in the ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, in the county of Cumberland, not far from Ireby. Wigton is its post town. It is situated in a hilly country on the banks of the river Ellen, and includes the townships of High Bolton, Low Bolton, or Bolton Wood, and Quarry Hill. Many of the inhabitants are employed in working the coal and limestone, which are very abundant here. Copper is also obtained. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Carlisle, of the value of £512, in the patronage of the Earl of Lonsdale. The church is dedicated to All Saints." "QUARRYHILL, a hamlet in the parish of Bolton, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, county Cumberland, 1 mile N.W. of Ireby. It is in conjunction with Low Bolton to form a township."
