"IRTHINGTON, a parish and township in the ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 2½ miles N.W. of Brampton. Carlisle is its post town. It is situated on the N. side of the river Irthing, which rises in Spadeadam Moss on the borders of Northumberland. The parish contains the townships of Irthington, Laversdale, Newby, and Newtown. The soil is various and the land chiefly arable. Remains of an ancient Roman fort or castle exist, and a large number of coins have recently been found in this neighbourhood. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Carlisle, value £300. The church, dedicated to St. Kentigern, is a stone structure with bell turret. In the interior is a stone pulpit and font, and three stained-glass windows. The E. window is in three compartments, one a representation of the patron saint, the centre Christ driving out the money changers, and the third Solomon superintending the building of the Temple. In the churchyard is a tombstone of Robert Bowman, who died here at the age of 119. The parochial charities produce £11 per annum. There is a parochial school, also a Sunday-school. The Earl of Carlisle and W. P. Johnson, Esq., are lords of the manor. The principal residence is the Nook, formerly the manor house." "LAVERSDALE, a township in the parish of Irthington, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 3 miles N.W. of Brampton. The village, which is considerable, is situated on the river Irthing, a tributary of the Eden, and near Watch Cross on the Wall, a spot planted with fir-trees." "LEVERSDALE, a township in the parish of Irthington, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 7 miles N.E. of Carlisle, and 2 W. of Brampton. The village, which is considerable, is situated near the river Irthing, which rises in Spadeadam Moss on the borders of Northumberland, and joins the Eden near Warwick Bridge. There is a school with a small endowment." "NEWBY, a township in the parish of Irthington, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 4 miles S.W. of Brampton, and 6 E. by N. of Carlisle. It is a small agricultural village situated at the confluence of the rivers Irthing and Eden." "NEWTOWN, a township in the parish of Irthington, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 2 miles N.W. of Brampton, its post town. The village, which is of small extent, is situated near the river Irthing, and is wholly agricultural."
