"NEWTON-REGNY, (or Newton Rainey), a parish in the ward of Leath, county Cumberland, 2¼ miles W. of Penrith, its nearest railway station and post town. The village, which is of small extent, and wholly agricultural, is situated on the Petteril stream. The parish includes the township of Catterlin and the hamlet of Sewborwen. The land is almost wholly arable. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Carlisle, value £96, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is of great antiquity, and has a chantry and two bells. The charities consist of Betton's annuity of £5. There is a school adjoining the church. The Earl of Lonsdale is lord of the manor." "CATTERLIN, a township in the parish of Newton Regny, Leath ward, in the county of Cumberland, 3 miles N.W. of Penrith. Catterlin Hall is about a mile from the village."
