"PONSONBY, a parish in the ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, county Cumberland, 1 mile from Calder Bridge, its post town, 4½ miles S. by E. of Egremont, and 2 from the station at Sellafield, on the Whitehaven and Furness Junction line of railway. The village, which is of small extent, is situated on the river Calder, and is wholly agricultural. The soil consists principally of a loamy mould, and is very productive. Freestone abounds.
