Abstracts of Cumberland Probate Records

This page was one of several created by Rosemary Lockie to provide abstracts of Wills of Cumberland. Unfortunately this collection is no longer available, though the following snippets of information which came to light during the process of collecting them may be of interest.
  • "You probably know that only an estimated 20% of the population left wills."
  • "It never crossed my mind that 400 years later someone would actually be living there..."
The latter was spoken of "Roger Ground" - mentioned in a Will, and the name of an old lakeland property where one of Rosemary's 'snail mail' correspondents used to live. It is to the west of Esthwaite Water, in the parish of Hawkshead, formerly in Lancashire but now in Cumbria.
