Cumberland Wills Collections
This page provides details of compilations of Cumberland Probate Records (Wills),
either partial abstracts or indexes, online and in printed collections. The following are listed
in reverse order of their creation, or my discovery.
- A probate index (1748-1858) for the Western Deaneries of the Archdeaconry of
Richmond (including Copeland, Furness, Kendal and Lonsdale) is provided by the
Institute of Local and Family History.
The full index of over 36,000 wills is searchable by members only (membership
£15p.a), but the alphabetical lists of surnames and place-names in the index
are searchable free of charge. Added 24 Jun 2007 [ex. Alan Stewart]
- Graham Hewitt is providing complete transcriptions of
Hewitt Family Wills of Cumbria and elsewhere, 1602 to late 1800.
Added 4 Nov 2006.
- Rob Burns invites submission of complete transcriptions of Wills for
his countrywide site 'Wills for All'.
-
DocumentsOnline, the National Archives (Public Record Office) collection of
digitised images of public records has all Wills
proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) available for download as .PDF files.
Generally these will be for the more wealthy testators holding land or property in more
than one county; in October 2006 there were 2,086 Wills of Testators resident in
Cumberland listed.
- Leslie Mahler's abstracts of Wills from
the
Commissary Court of London 1629-1634 includes one entry for Cumberland.
