"STANWIX, a parish in the wards of Cumberland and Eskdale, county Cumberland, half a mile N. of Carlisle, of which it is a populous suburb. The village is situated on an eminence at the bridge over the river Eden. The parish includes the townships of Cargo, Etterby, Houghton, Linstock, Rickerby, Stainton, and Tarraby. In the vicinity are traces of a Roman station, of which Severus's Wall formed the northern rampart, and near which many altars and inscriptions have been found. In a secluded spot near the Eden are the Hyssop Holme baths. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Carlisle, value £264, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, was erected in 1841, since which period it was partly destroyed by fire, but was restored in 1843. There is also the district church of St. John's, Houghton, the living of which is a perpetual curacy, value £40. The parochial charities produce about £7 per annum. There is a National school for both sexes, also a government reformatory for juvenile offenders, opened in 1854 by G. H. Head, Esq., by whom it is supported." "CARGO, (or Craghow), a township in the parish of Stanwix, in the ward and county of Cumberland, 3 miles N.W. of Carlisle. It is seated on the banks of the river Eden." "ETTERBY, a township in the parish of Stanwix, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 1 mile N.W. of Carlisle. It is situated on the river Eden, and the ship canal passes near the township. On a lofty eminence called Etterby Scar there is obtained a fine view of the city and surrounding country." "HOUGHTON, a township and district parish in the parish of Stanwix, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 2 miles N.E. of Carlisle. It is situated on a branch of the river Eden, and partly on the high road to Scotland. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle, value £40, in the patronage of trustees. The church, dedicated to St. John, was built in 1840. It is a white freestone structure with a tower. There is an endowed school. Houghton Hall is the principal residence." "LINSTOCK, a township in the parish of Stanwix, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 2 miles N.E. of Carlisle, its post town, and 2 from Stanwix. It is situated on the banks of the river Eden, and has the tower of an old palace of the bishops of Carlisle, where Bishop Halton received Edward I. in 1307, who kept his court here for six days. A little to the N.E. are the remains of Drawdykes Castle, originally built out of the materials of the Roman wall which crossed its site, and partly rebuilt by John Aglionby, recorder of Carlisle in the 17th century. It is now converted into a farmhouse." "RICKERBY, a township in the parish of Stanwix, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 2 miles N.E. of Carlisle, on the river Eden. Rickerby Hall is the principal residence." "STAINTON, a township in the parish of Stanwix, ward and county of Cumberland, 3 miles N.W. of Carlisle, near the Picts' Wall. The Earl of Lonsdale is lord of the manor." "TARRABY, a township in the parish of Stanwix, ward of Eskdale, county Cumberland, 1 mile N.E. of Carlisle."
