"TORPENHOW, a parish in the hundred of Allerdale-below-Derwent, county Cumberland, 7 miles S. of Wigton, its post town, 2½ N.W. of Ireby, and 3½ from the Leigate station on the Maryport and Carlisle line of railway. It is situated near the river Ellen, and about a mile to the E. of the Carlisle and Cockermouth turnpike road. The parish is divided into the four townships of Bewaldeth and Snittlegarth, Blennerhasset and Kirkland, Bothel and Threapland, and Torpenhow and Whitrigg. The soil is various, with a subsoil of limestone and gravel, and traces of coal. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Carlisle, value £305, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, has a curiously carved oak roof. The interior contains several old monuments. The parochial charities produce about £65, of which sum £50 go to the free school situated at Bothel. W. J. Charlton, Esq., is lord of the manor." "BLENNERHASSETT, a township united with Kirkland, in the parish of Torpenhow, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, in the county of Cumberland, 4 miles to the W. of Ireby. It is seated on the banks of the river Eske. There is a chapel belonging to the Independents. The charitable endowments of the township produce £3 a year." "BOTHEL, a township joined with Threapland, in the parish of Torpenhow, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, in the county of Cumberland, 8 miles to the E. of Maryport. There is much limestone in the neighbourhood." "KIRKLAND, a hamlet in the parish of Torpenhow, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, county Cumberland, 7 miles N.E. of Cockermouth. It is situated near the river Ellen, and is joined with Blennerhassett to form a township. Limestone and coal are worked." "SNITTLEGARTH, a hamlet in the parish of Torpenhow, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, county Cumberland, 7 miles N.E. of Cockermouth, and 1½ mile S.W. of Derby.
