ST CATHERINE'S INDEX - page ranges for BDM districts
This table shows page ranges for BDM districts based on 1849/Q1
marriages. The structure will hold good for all early quarters
of the St Cath's data, tho ranges will vary between quarters.
Note that the district names are arranged alphabetically within
each volume, on a county basis. Thus many volumes have two or
more alpha sequences. In the 1850s the volumes were changed
and districts are no longer in alpha sequence. Hence a table
such as this becomes much harder to read and use in later
years.
The table can be invaluable in deciphering poor fiche. You may
need to calibrate for other quarters.
St Cath's page numbering is continuous through each volume. The
asterisks indicate 2 discontinuities where there is an odd-
number page without any index entries. Even-numbered pages are
very often not used as the submitted sheets often used only the
first side of the sheet.
Note that spelling varies within St Caths, like Wirral and
Wirrall, Prescot and Prescott, Hitchen & Hitchin, St Martin
& St Martins, etc.
At this period in the St Cath's records the district names were
essentially in alphabetic sequence within county areas, a
helpful method. This sequencing was abandoned when the system
was changed in the 1850s.
