The parish of Morval, (Cornish: Morval), is situated in the Deanery and Hundred of West. It is bounded on the north by Liskeard and Menheniot, on the east by St Germans, on the south by St Martins, and on the west by Duloe. The parish consists of rolling countryside and is located just north of the south coast fishing port of Looe. The origin of name is unknown. Morval House was once the home of the Buller and Kitson families. At one time canal boats would come up the river to Sandplace and discharge cargoes of seaweed which would be spread on the fields as fertiliser. The boats would then return to Looe with lime from the kilns.

The only village in the parish is that of Sandplace.

Gazetteers

The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"MORVAL, a parish in the hundred of West, county Cornwall, 3 miles N.E. of East Looe, its post town, and 6 S.E. of Liskeard. The village, which is small, is situated on the canal which joins the Loos river near its termination at this place, and is chiefly agricultural. Morval formerly belonged to the Glyns, Coades, and Sir Hugh de Morville, one of Thomas-a-Becket's murderers. The substratum abounds with limestone, which is extensively quarried and sent to Liskeard by the canal. From Tregarlin Torr, in this parish, a view is commanded of the winding vale of Morval, terminated in the distance by Bindon Hill, which rises to the height of 900 feet above the sea. The vicarial tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £200. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value £333, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated to St. Wenn, and contains tombs of the Mayows of Bray, the Coades, and other families. The charities produce about £23, which go to Buller's almshouses and a school. John Francis Buller, Esq., is lord of the manor and proprietor of Morval House, an old seat. The other seats, called Polgover and Lydcott, are now converted into farmhouses."
