ABNEY and ABNEY GRANGE, Derbyshire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"ABNEY and ABNEY GRANGE, a joint township, consisting of these two small hamlets in the parish of Hope, and hundred of High Peak, in the county of Derby, 4 miles N.E. of Tideswell. At the time of Domesday Survey this manor belonged to William Peveril, or Peveril of the Peak.

It is situated on a branch of the river Derwent, and was for some time the seat of the Abneys, who became afterwards, through the family of the Gunstons, possessors of Abney Park, near London, in the south-eastern part of Middlesex. This park derives its interest from the circumstance of Dr. Watts having resided in the old house. It is now converted into a cemetery, having a chapel and a monument to Dr. Watts."
