"CLIFTON, a township in the parish of Ashbourne, in the hundred of Morleston, in the county of Derby, 1 mile S.W. of Ashbourne, its post town. It is bounded on the W. by the river Dove. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Lichfield, value £85, in the patronage of the Vicar of Ashbourne. The church is a modern building. There is an Independent chapel, and schools for both sexes."

"COMPTON, a township in the parish of Ashbourne, hundred of Morleston, in the county of Derby, 1 mile from Ashbourne. It is joined to Clifton. Miss Frances Hayne is lady of the manor."
