Description of Curbar & All Saints Church

The small village of Curbar lies 5 miles north-east of Bakewell. High above the village is the rugged Froggatt Edge and the desolate Derbyshire moors. The River Derwent winds its way past the village and not far distant is Chatsworth House.

Nearby is Cliff College, the Methodist training centre for lay preachers, hence the number of references in the churchyard. One stone of interest is that to the memory of George Butcher, who was noted for his fishing capabilities. He was a carpenter and a preacher as well as a fisherman. Yet another stone to the memory of a fisherman is that to Augustus Sherwood, who was for many years, River Watcher to the Chatsworth Estate and was erected by friends in remembrance of happy days on the Derwent.

The ecclesiastical parish of Curbar was formed in 1869 from that of Baslow, St. Anne, and includes Calver and Froggatt. The church was built in 1867 and the registers date from 1868.
