DERWENT, Derbyshire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
"DERWENT, a chapelry in the parish of Hathersage, hundred of High Peak, in the county of Derby, 3¾ miles N.E. of Castleton, and 11 W. of Sheffield. It is situated on the river Derwent. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Lichfield, value £83, in the patronage of G. Newdegate, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. James. There is a school with a small endowment. The Duke of Devonshire is impropriator of the great tithes. Derwent Hall is the principal residence."

"THE ABBEY, a ruin near Castleton, in the hundred of High Peak, in the county of Derby, 6 miles N. of Castleton and 38 N. of Derby, situated on the river Derwent." [now under the Derwent reservoir -CH 2003]
