War Memorial - Grindleford, Derbyshire

The Memorial is a Celtic Cross set on a series of tapering square plinths, surrounded by a low retaining wall and railings. It is located at the old centre of the village - the village green, adjacent to the Methodists' Chapel and opposite the Sir William Hotel (see War Memorial Photograph). The Parish Council planned to have the memorial renovated in 2001, as the stones have become encrusted with algae from the nearby cypressus trees.

The inscriptions on the east-facing upper plinths read:-

Some notes on the Memorial

Second Lieutenant John Wilmot Maynard served in 3^rd Bn., King's Royal Rifle Corps, and died on Saturday, 24th April 1915. Age 18 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Edmund Anthony Jefferson Maynard and Margaret Blanche Maynard, of Hoon Ridge, Hilton, Derbyshire. What is he doing commemorated in Grindleford? A Maynard family owned land in Nether Padley, and so perhaps he may have been managing the family estate. Officer.

Serjeant 12/336 Randall Cooper served in "B" Coy. 12^th (Sheffield) Bn., York and Lancaster Regiment, and died on Saturday, 1st July 1916. Age 20 (killed in action). He is buried in QUEENS CEMETERY, PUISIEUX, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of George and Florence Cooper, of Derwent House, Grindleford Bridge, and enlisted at Sheffield.

Private 16184 Fred Uttley served in 9^th Bn., King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and died on Saturday, 1st July 1916. Age 22 (killed in action). He is buried in GORDON DUMP CEMETERY, OVILLERS-LA BOISSELLE, Somme, France. He was born Crowdon, Glossop, the son of Willis and Rebecca Uttley, of Grindleford, and enlisted at Sheffield.

Private 28406 Joe Hodgkinson served in 1^st Bn., Cheshire Regiment, and died on Monday, 4th September 1916. Age 21 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. He was the son of George and Mary Hodgkinson, of Grindleford, and enlisted at Sheffield.

Private 60227 George Hodgkinson served in 2^nd/5^th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Thursday, 21st March 1918. Age 20 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of George and Mary Hodgkinson, of Grindleford, and enlisted at Derby. He was the brother of Joe, above.

Private 38590 William Arthur Kenyon served in "D" Coy. 17^th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Monday, 30th July 1917. Age 30 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of William and Sarah Jane Kenyon, of 1, Council Houses, Grindleford, and enlisted at Hathersage.

Private 60239 Harry White served in 2^nd/8^th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Friday, 28th September 1917. Age 19 (killed in action). He is buried in DOCHY FARM NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, Langemark-Poelkapelle, West-V., Belgium. He was the son of Edward Russel White and Alice Ann White, of 3, Council Houses, Grindleford, and enlisted at Bakewell. He is listed in the SDGW database as Harry WAITE.

Private 34469 Frank Pennock served in 7^th Bn., Yorkshire Regiment, and died on Thursday, 15th November 1917 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was born and enlisted Sheffield. Formerly 204890 York. & Lanc. Regt. See also below, his sons Charles Eggington and Frank Leslie Pennock, who are remembered in the 1939-45 section of these notes.

Lieutenant Frank Sidney Holland served in 2^nd/6^th Bn. (Territorial), Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regt.), and died on Tuesday, 27th November 1917. Age 23 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL, Nord, France. He was the son of Job and Eva Holland, of The Gables, Grindleford. Officer.

Able Seaman R/2878 John Clifford Priestley served in Anson Bn. R.N. Div., Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and died on Thursday, 29th November 1917. Age 29. He is buried in SOLFERINO FARM CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the div. son of John and Sarah Priestley; husband of Edith Priestley, of 1, Council Houses, Grindleford. Not found in SDGW database - presumably as he was a sailor.

Private 31196 Frederick Moor Brocksopp served in 16^th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regt.), and died on Thursday, 21st March 1918. Age 21 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. He was born Sheffield, the son of Sarah Ann Brocksopp, of Goatscliffe, and the late John Henry Brocksopp, and enlisted at Bakewell. He lived in what is now Goatscliffe Farm.

Lance Corporal WR/501153 William Tenniswood served in Inland Waterways and Docks., Royal Engineers, and died on Friday, 17th May 1918 (died). He is buried in LES BARAQUES MILITARY CEMETERY, SANGATTE, Pas de Calais, France.

Private 57140 John Dronfield served in 11^th Bn., Lancashire Fusiliers, and died on Tuesday, 28th May 1918. Age 18 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the SOISSONS MEMORIAL, Aisne, France. He was the son of William and Gertrude E. Dronfield, of Grindleford, and enlisted Bakewell.

Private 201848 Luther Priestley served in 12^th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Bn., Royal Scots Fusiliers, and died on Friday, 19th July 1918. Age 20 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium. He was born Hathersage, the son of Septimus and E. J. Priestley, of White Edge Lodge, Calver, and enlisted Derby.

Private 240635 F Westby served in 2^nd/6^th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Sunday, 11th August 1918. Age 20 (died of wounds). He is buried in COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY, Germany. He was born Long Eaton, the son of Mrs. Jane Westby, of Sheffield, and enlisted Long Eaton.

Corporal 572556 Ernest Cecil Barley served in Royal Air Force, and died on Saturday, 11th October 1941. Age 19. He is buried in SHELFORD (SS. PETER & PAUL) CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, Notts. He was the son of Thomas Wrigley Barley and Annie Maud Barley, of Grindleford.

Midshipman Robert Gordon Bower served in H.M.S. Barham, Royal Naval Reserve, and died on Tuesday, 25th November 1941. Age 17. He is commemorated on the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hants. He was the son of Joseph Gordon Bower and of Marie Bower (nee Petitjean).

Pilot Officer 33563 Pilot Charles Trevor Davis Dfc served in 238 Sqdn., Royal Air Force, and died on Wednesday, 26th March 1941. Age 20. He is buried in WOKING (ST. JOHN'S) CREMATORIUM, Surrey. He was the son of John and Ethel Davis, of Grindleford, Derbyshire.

Lieutenant Michael Harburn Davis served in H.M. Submarine Rainbow, Royal Navy, and died on Saturday, 19th October 1940. Age 26. He is commemorated on the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hants. He was the son of John and Ethel Davis, of Grindleford, Derbyshire. Brother of Charles Trevor, above.

Gunner 4977454 Kenneth French served in 7 Coast Regt., Royal Artillery, and died on Friday, 5th March 1943. Age 20. He is commemorated on the SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Singapore.

Private 7600666 Peter Robert Kenyon served in 4 Ordnance Field Park, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, and died on Saturday, 31st August 1940. Age 26. He is buried in GRINDLEFORD (ST. HELEN) CHURCHYARD. He was the son of Peter James Kenyon, and of Ada Kenyon, of Frecheville, Sheffield.

Serjeant 4037174 Charles Eggington Pennock served in 9^th Bn., Durham Light Infantry, and died on Thursday, 3rd September 1942. Age 25. He is buried in ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. He was the son of Pte. Frank Pennock, Yorkshire Regt. (died on active service, 15th November, 1917), and Ethel Pennock; husband of Joan Lomas Pennock, of Tideswell. See also above.

Corporal 531518 Frank Leslie Pennock served in 113 Sqdn., Royal Air Force, and died on Thursday, 8th May 1941. Age 28. He is buried in RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY, Israel. He was the son of Pte. Frank Pennock, Yorkshire Regt. (Killed in action in Belgium, 15th November, 1917), and of Ethel Pennock, of Grindleford. See also above.

Lieutenant 293725 Henry Bonnington Ridgeway served in 142^nd (7^th Bn. The Suffolk Regt.) Regt., Royal Armoured Corps, and died on Thursday, 3rd August 1944. Age 21. He is buried in FLORENCE WAR CEMETERY, Italy. He was the son of Clement Bernard and Doris Ethel Ridgeway, of Padley.

Sergeant 1473490 Leslie Leonard John Smith served in 138 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and died on Monday, 8th May 1944. Age 20. He is buried in FREDERIKSHAVN CEMETERY, Denmark. He was the son of Leonard and Mabel Eveline Smith, of Castleton.

Private 14810592 Walter Smith served in 2^nd Bn., West Yorkshire Regt. (Prince of Wales's Own), and died on Tuesday, 15th May 1945. Age 19. He is buried in RANGOON WAR CEMETERY, Myanmar. He was the son of Leonard and Mabel Eveline Smith, of Castleton. Brother of Leslie Leonard, above.

Pilot Officer 61969 Ronald Victor Trueman served in 405 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and died on Thursday, 24th July 1941. Age 22. He is commemorated on the RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, Surrey, United Kingdom. He was the son of Roland and Gertrude Trueman; husband of Eleanor Joan Trueman, of Shatton.
