The Over Haddon Censuses, 1841 - 1901

transcriptions of Over Haddon Censuses of 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901

Having lived in Over Haddon for over 30 years, and for the benefit of anyone not familiar with the area, Carolyn would like to explain the relationship of Over Haddon and some of the towns & villages mentioned in the accompanying censuses.
Over Haddon is 2 miles SW of Bakewell, overlooking the River Lathkill with its spectacular dale. Its adjoining villages are Alport, Youlgreave, Monyash, Sheldon & Ashford-in-the-Water. Conksbury, between Over Haddon & Youlgreave, is a deserted medieval village now consisting of a few scattered houses. Haddon Grove, to the west of the village, is a cluster of several farms. Meadow Place is a farm, an old grange across Lathkill Dale from Over Haddon. Harthill Hall is about a mile from Youlgreave.
Longstone (Great & Little) is about 5 miles to the NW. Taddington is about 10 miles to the NW, on the present A6. Blackwell, Priestcliff & Brushfield are small settlements to the N of Taddington. Burbage is to the south of Buxton.
Edensor (pronounced "Ensor"), Pilsley & Beeley are about 5 miles to the NE & are part of the Chatsworth estate. Calver & Baslow are about 8 miles to the NE, also near Chatsworth. Robin Hood must be either the Robin Hood pub or the cluster of house surrounding it lying on the Baslow to Chesterfield road.
Holymoorside is a village on the outskirts of Chesterfield.
Hartington & Biggin lie about 8 miles to the west of the village, as does Fawfldhead (Fawfieldhead), which is next to Longnor. Sterndale & Earl Sterndale lie about 8 miles to the NW. Brierlow Bar is another tiny settlement, close to Sterndale. Hurdlow is a tiny settlement about 5 miles due west. Chelmorton & Flagg are about 4 miles to the NW.
Hathersage is about 10 miles to the north, near the Derwent Dams.
Balindon, we presume, is Ballidon, a few miles outside Derby.
Rowsley is on the A6 about 3 miles east of Bakewell. Darley is Darley Dale (not Darley Abbey), on what is now the A6 between Bakewell & Matlock, and Darley Moor is on the hillside above Darley Dale. Stanton (in-the-Peak), Bonsall, Elton, Winster & Birchover are about 5 miles to the SE. Grangemill is a small settlement about 10 miles to the SE. Tansley is just outside Matlock.
And finally, Middleton. There are 2 Middletons in the area, Middleton by Youlgreave & Middleton by Wirksworth.
