Description of Aldercar (Heanor) & St. John the Evangelist's Church

The hamlet of Aldercar lies on the bank of the River Erewash which forms the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Alongside the river is the line of the Cromford Canal, now filled in but hopefully being restored, which joined the Erewash Canal in the "basin" at nearby Langley Mill.

The church of St. John the Evangelist, a 'chapel of ease' to the parish of Langley Mill, was erected in 1868. Langley Mill, lying between Heanor and Eastwood is well known for its industries that have included over the years hosiery and iron, Smith's Flour Mill and the famous Lovatt's Pottery.

Aldercar lies a little distant from the 'hub' of industry. Its inhabitants in the past worked mainly in the aforesaid industries, the coal mines which also dominated the area and farming. There were also of course 'visiting' canal families.

The majority of gravestones in the churchyard were removed from their original positions some years ago and were placed around the edges of the churchyard. When the churchyard became full a small cemetery was opened across the road from the church.

This is now full and burials take place at Marlpool/Heanor Cemetery. The registers of Aldercar Church are deposited at the County Record Office at Matlock. Before 1868 entries concerning people of this area will be found in the registers of the Church of St. Lawrence, Heanor which are also deposited at the County Record Office.
