BRAMPTON is a village and parish, about 3½ miles W. from Chesterfield. At Brampton-moor are extensive stone potteries, belonging to Messrs. T. Oldfield and Co., Messrs. H. and S. Briddon and Mr. J. Wright; Mr. W. Briddon, at Walton, and others; at New Brampton, are iron works, and in the neighbourhood is a coal mine.Brampton church, dedicated to St. Peter, is an antique building, first erected in the 12th century, since which period it has been partly rebuilt. A new church, under the direction of the parliamentary commissioners, has been lately erected, dedicated to St. Thomas, in the gift of the dean of Lincoln: the present minister is the Rev. Matson Vincent, M. A. This church has been built for the inhabitants of the district comprising Walton, part of Brampton, and part of Newbold. A handsome school has been also estsablished, connected with the district belonging to this church; there are besides places or worship for independents and methodists.
The parish (including CUTTHORPE hamlet) contained, at the last census (1831), 3,594 inhabitants.
