War Memorial - Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire

The Memorial is a large Gritstone Cross set on a plinth. It is located in St. Martin's Churchyard.

Some notes on the Memorial

Private 1911 G A (George A) Bailey served in 1st/6th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Sunday, 12th March 1916 (killed in action). He is buried in CABARET-ROUGE BRITISH CEMETERY, SOUCHEZ, Pas de Calais, France. He was born in and enlisted at Stoney Middleton.

Private 42527 Alfred Barker served in West Yorkshire Regt. (Prince of Wales's Own) and died on Thursday, 16th August 1917 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was born in Stoney Middleton and enlisted at Sheffield.

Lance Corporal 12397 Frank Blackwell served in 2nd Bn., Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and died on Tuesday, 9th October 1917. Age 36 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Hannah Blackwell, of High Street, Stoney Middleton, and the late Ezra Blackwell, born in Chesterfield, and enlisted at Bakewell.

Private 47574 T C (Thomas Cuthbert) Eidson served in 2nd Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Saturday, 16th December 1916. Age 34 (killed in action). He is buried in WOBURN ABBEY CEMETERY, CUINCHY, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of John William and Mary Eidson, of Stony Middleton, and enlisted at Bakewell.

Company Serjeant Major 158 William Goddard MM served in 6th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regt.), and died on Saturday, 1st July 1916. Age 33 (killed in action). He is buried in FONCQUEVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of James and Maria Goddard, of Stoney Middleton; husband of Gertrude Goddard, of Vicarage Rd, Stoney Middleton, and enlisted at Stoney Middleton.

Private 24026 Herbert Hancock served in 8th Bn., Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regt.), and died on Tuesday, 28th August 1917 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, and in Stoney Middleton Cemetery. He was the son of Edmund and Ellen Hancock, of Stoney Middleton, and enlisted at Bakewell.

Private 71319 Joseph Hancock served in 15th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Saturday, 11th August 1917 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France, and in Stoney Middleton Cemetery. He was the son of John and Frances Hancock, of Stoney Middleton, and enlisted at Bakewell.

Private 71324 C (Clifford) Jackson served in 15th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Saturday, 25th August 1917 (killed in action). He is buried in TEMPLEUX-LE-GUERARD BRITISH CEMETERY, Somme, France. He was born in Stoney Middleton and enlisted at Chesterfield.

Private 71325 James Jackson served in 15th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Thursday, 28th March 1918 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. He was born in Stoney Middleton and enlisted at Bakewell.

Serjeant 12552 Albury Jerram served in 2nd Bn., Grenadier Guards, and died on Saturday, 30th September 1916. Age 32 (died). He is buried in STONEY MIDDLETON (ST. MARTIN) CHURCH CEMETERY. He was the son of Robert and Ann Jerram, of Royal Oak, Stoney Middleton, born in Kirk Langley, and enlisted at Chesterfield.

Private 240441 Arthur Lennon served in "A" Coy. 17th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Monday, 31st December 1917. Age 19 (died of wounds). He is buried in DUHALLOW A.D.S. CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of William Anthony and Charlotte Lennon, of The Dale, Stoney Middleton, born in Eyam, and enlisted at Calver.

Corporal 8938 Charles Parkin served in 1st Bn., Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, and died on Friday, 7th May 1915 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. He was born in and enlisted at Sheffield.
I'm not sure whether this is the Charles Parkin on the Memorial, but he's the only one listed born close to Stoney Middleton.

Private 203153 I (Isaac) Slater served in 2nd Bn., Lincolnshire Regiment, and died on Saturday, 2nd November 1918. Age 32 (killed in action). He is buried in POIX-DU-NORD COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. He was the son of George and Sarah Slater, of Stoney Middleton, and enlisted at Derby.

Private 204352 Charles Ward served in 2nd/5th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Thursday, 21st March 1918. Age 38 (killed in action). He is commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. He was the husband of Anne Elizabeth Ward, of Rock View, Stoney Middleton, and enlisted at Bakewell.


Sergeant 1166513 W.Op./Air Gnr. Leslie James Caldwell served in 158 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and died on Tuesday, 10th March 1942. Age 22. He is buried in TANSLEY (HOLY TRINITY) CHURCHYARD, Derbyshire. He was the son of the Revd. George Caldwell and Nellie Caldwell, of Tansley Rectory. The Rev. Caldwell had previously been Vicar of Stoney Middleton from 1936 until 1942.

Flight Sergeant 1265662 Nav. John Percival Nugent served in 49 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and died on Thursday, 23rd September 1943. Age 29. He is buried in RHEINBERG WAR CEMETERY, Germany. He was the son of Francis and Ellen Nugent, of Stony Middleton.

Driver 1900493 Tom George Pinder served in 714 Gen. Construction Coy., Royal Engineers, and died on Thursday, 13th March 1941. Age 32. He is buried in STONEY MIDDLETON (ST. MARTIN) CHURCH CEMETERY, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. He was the son of Tom and Edith Annie Pinder; husband of Ena Pinder, of Stoney Middleton.

Private 4977051 Stanley Waine served in 5th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), and died on Wednesday, 18th August 1943. He is buried in MASSICAULT WAR CEMETERY, Tunisia. He was the husband of Ethel Waine, of Stoney Middleton, Yorkshire.
