The author of the "Worthies of Devon" and the Prince family

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 25, (1893) pp.416-430.

by

Winslow Jones

Prepared by Michael Steer

John Prince was born in 1643 in a farmhouse on the site of an abbey - now called Prince's Abbey. He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, and became curate of Bideford. He then became minister of St. Martin's Church in Exeter. He was vicar of Totnes from 1675 to 1681, then vicar of Berry Pomeroy, a post he held for over 40 years. While at Berry Pomeroy, Prince wrote a biography of Devon's many notable figures, probably finished in 1697. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
