The Parish Clerks of Barnstaple

Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. 36 (1904). pp. 390-414.

by

J.F. Chanter

Prepared by Michael Steer

The first mention of parish clerks in England occurs in the laws of Edgar's reign (AD 975), when priests were instructed to attend synod accompanied by their clerks. Chanter's paper traces the history of parish clerks, and provides a complete list of the parish clerks of St Peter's Church, Barnstaple with notes of some of the interesting matters they recorded, as well as their biographical details and those of the clergy they served. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
