The Great Gorham Case:

A History in Five Books, Including Expositions of the Rival Baptismal Theoriesby a Looker-on

by

Thomas Binney

London: Partridge and Oakey (1850). xxviii, 249 pp.

Prepared by Michael Steer

In 1847 Rev George Cornelius Gorham BD, was appointed by its Patron to the living of Brampford Speke, but on account of his denial of the doctrine of Baptismal Regeneration the Bishop of Exeter refused to institute him. The Court of the Dean of Arches, to which the case was taken, decided in 1849 that the Bishop was justified in his action. The decision was appealed against. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council reversed the judgment of the Ecclesiastical Court, and Rev Mr. Gorham was instituted. This decision caused a great deal of controversy at the time and resulted in a large number of clergymen leaving the Church of England for the Church of Rome. Gorham spent the rest of his life at his post in Brampford Speke. This rare book was produced from a digital copy held by the Library of the Union Theological Seminary, New York, that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
