Dr Thomas Tanner

Published by John Tanner, AM, Vicar of Lowestoft. London: Printed by William Bowyer
at the expense of the Society for the Encouragement of Learning (1744). Illus., pp. lx, 552.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Thomas Tanner (1674-1735), bishop of St. Asaph and antiquary, was born at Market Lavington, Wiltshire, His 'Notitia Monastica' brought him to the notice of John Moore, then bishop of Norwich, whose private chaplain he became in 1698 and in March 1700-1 he was collated, by the gift of the bishop, to the chancellorship of Norwich diocese. He was raised to the archdeaconry of Norfolk on 26 Dec. 1721, and the lower house of convocation in 1727 elected him as its prolocutor. He took the degrees of B.D. and D.D. on 30 June 1710. On 23 Jan. 1731-2 he was consecrated at Lambeth as bishop of St. Asaph. Tanner was the author of two well known works, this one and the 'Bibliotheca Britannico-Hibernica' (1748), which was also printed at the cost of the society for encouraging learning. He had laboured at it for forty years, The purpose of the unique compendium is reflected in its title. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books.
