CLAYHIDON

"CLAYHIDON, (or Clehedon), a parish in the hundred of Hemyock, in the county of Devon, 3 miles S. of Wellington, its post town and railway station, and 15 E. of Tiverton. It is situated under the Black Down hills, near the source of the river Culme. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £508, in the patronage of G. Burnaud, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is an ancient stone edifice in the Gothic style, with tower, the interior of which has been recently restored. The Baptists have a place of worship. The charities are of the value of £18 per annum. William Gifford, Esq., is lord of the manor.
