CORNWOOD

"CORNWOOD, a parish in the hundred of Ermington, in the county of Devon, 8 miles E. of Plymouth, and 4 N.W. of Ivybridge, its post town and railway station on the South Devon line. It is situated on the borders of Dartmoor, and is divided from Harford by the river Erme. The country is hilly and intersected by mountain streams. The river Yealm flows through the parish, which includes part of the village of Ivybridge, and the townships of Dunaton, Torr, Lutton, Waterleet, and Houndle. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value £405, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is an ancient stone edifice in the early English style of architecture, with three stone stalls, sedilia, pisoina, and remains of a carved screen. There is also a district church at Ivybridge, the living of which is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Lady Rogers and W. Cotton, Esq., alternately. Here is an endowed school. W. Praed, Esq., is lord of the manor, and resides at Delamore. Fairs for cattle are held on the first Monday in May and the fourth Monday in September."
