Quarter Sessions from Queen Elizabeth to Queen Anne

Illustrations of Local Government and History Drawn from Original Records (Chiefly of the County of Devon)

by

Alexander Henry Abercromby Hamilton

London: Sampson Lowe, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, Crown Buildings, 188 Fleet Street (1878) 364 pp.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Courts of Quarter Sessions were periodic courts held in each county and county borough in England and Wales until 1972. They derive their name from the fact that they were required by a statute of 1388 to be held at least four times a year. These were later settled as Epiphany, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas sessions. A print copy of the book, dedicated by its author to the Earl of Devon, is held at the University of Toronto Library and was produced from a digital copy that can be downloaded from https://archive.org/details/quartersessionsf00hamiuoft
