The life and times of St Boniface
By James Mann Williamson
Ventnor: W J White, and London: Henry Frowde, (1904). illus., pp. iv, 137.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
James Mann Williamson, MD, CM (Edin)- (1849-1901) was a highly respected doctor. His first appointment after qualifying at Edinburgh was as House Surgeon and Resident Medical Officer at the Royal National Hospital, Ventnor, where he stayed for three and a half years. He left to become Medical Officer to the Welbeck Dispensary, Marylebone and after, returned to practice in Ventnor. He eventually had a large private practice and his letters show that his patients included young Winston Churchill, Karl Marx and many of the nobility and gentry who patronised Ventnor at that time. He published extensively, mostly on matters medical. Saint Boniface (Latin: Bonifatius) (c. 675?–5 June 754 AD), born Winfrid, Wynfrith, or Wynfryth in or near Crediton in the kingdom of Wessex was a leading figure in the Anglo-Saxon mission to the Germanic parts of the Frankish Empire during the 8th century. He established the first organized Christianity in many parts of Germania. He is the patron saint of Germania, and the first archbishop of Mainz. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. The copy of this rare book is held at the Harvard University Library and is available from HathiTrust.
