Savery, Newcomen and the early history of the steam-engine - Part 2

Thomas Newcomen (abt.1664 - 1729) created the first practical steam engine for pumping water. He was an ironmonger by trade and a Baptist lay preacher by calling, born in Dartmouth, near a part of the country noted for its tin mines. Flooding was a major problem, limiting the depth at which the mineral could be mined. His invention combined the ideas of Thomas Savery and Denis Papin. It is likely that Newcomen was already acquainted with Savery, whose forebears were merchants in south Devon in 1712. Savery also had a post with the Commissioners for Sick and Hurt Seamen, which took him to Dartmouth. This paper explores the relationship. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
