Prepared by Michael Steer

B. H. St. John O'Neill, MA, (1905 -1954), was Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments in the Ministry of Works. As an Inspector of Ancient Monuments he wrote or commissioned authoritative guide books to ancient monuments of all periods. He specialised in medieval castles. One of the guide books he wrote was this one, on Dartmouth Castle, where the 'Guntower' building of 1481 and 1495 is the earliest surviving English coastal fortress specifically built to carry guns. This gave him a great interest in the development of early artillery fortification, in which he became a leading expert of his day. His book Castles and Cannon; A study of Early Artillery Fortifications in England, (1960), has become a standard work. Dartmouth Castle was perhaps initially produced as a report to H M Office of Works and Public Buildings then became a Guide, selling at 6d a copy. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the University of California Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
