Robert Herrick: A Biographical and Critical Study, Part I, The Life (pp. 1-116)

London: Thomas Nelson & Sons Ltd. (1910), 251 pp.

by

F.W. Moorman

Prepared by Michael Steer

Herrick was vicar of Dean Prior from 1629-1647 and again from 1662 to the end of his life. At first he was repelled by the warty incivility of Devonshire rural life but over time became accustomed to it. He is renowned for his highly crafted lyrics on human mortality. Swinburne called him 'The greatest song-writer ever born to the English race.' Herrick (with Carew, Suckling and Lovelace) was one of the cavalier poets. Although not a formal group, they were all supporters of Charles I and were heavily influenced by Ben Jonson. The author, a professor at the University of Leeds, presents the book in two parts that include two appendixes, The second part presents Herrick's works rather than his biography, and is therefore, not included in this index. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the University of Michigan Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
