A Book of the West: Being an Introduction to Devon and Cornwall
Vol. 1, Devon
New York: New Amsterdam Book Co (1900) xii, 372pp.
by
S. Baring-Gould
Prepared by Michael Steer
The author was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist and eclectic scholar. His bibliography consists of more than 1240 publications, though this list continues to grow. His family home, the manor house of Lew Trenchard, near Okehampton, has been preserved as he had it rebuilt and is now a hotel. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "Now the Day Is Over". He also translated the carol "Gabriel's Message" from the Basque language to English. In his preface to this entertaining and informative Book of the West, the author asserts- "I have endeavoured to convey to the visitor to our western peninsula a general idea of what is interesting and what ought to attract his attention. The book is not intended to supersede guidebooks, but to prepare the mind to use these latter with discretion". This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the New York Public Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
