Black's Guide to Devonshire (16th Edition)
London: Adam & Charles Black (1898). illus., maps, 228 pp.
by
A.R. Hope Moncrieff (ed.)
Prepared by Michael Steer
Tourism was a product of the Victorian era, hugely developed through Edwardian times and generating thousands of fascinating books and photographs that together define the development of the massive industry we know today. The introduction of statutory holidays, the increasing wealth of the Victorian middle classes, and the expanding railway and steamship networks all helped develop the emerging tourist industry. The package tour increased demand for descriptive texts, and early guidebooks by Sylvan, A. & C. Black and others, and later Baedeker, give us a rich source of contemporary accounts. Black's Guides were published by the Adam and Charles Black firm of Edinburgh (later London) beginning in 1839. The firm's Guidebooks were mass produced for travellers to most parts of Britain and for tourists to most English counties; as well as for those wishing to visit France and Egypt. There is an index of places, pp-229-232. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the Princeton University Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
