Henry John Whitfeld (variously Whitfield) 1808-1855, was the son of John Clarke Whitfield. He in 1852 wrote Scilly and its Legends, followed in 1854 by his Rambles in Devon, his major work. Whitfeld was a graduate (AM, 1843) of Downing College, Cambridge, Vicar of Granborough, Buckinghamshire (1845-1855) and Domestic Chaplain to the Earl of Mornington. He was armigerous and claimed relationship by marriage with the Giles family of Bowden in South Devon. He resided for some years for health reasons in Penzance and in 1855 became Officiating Chaplain at Scutari in the Crimea. He died at Scutari on 17 June that year. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bodleian collection that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers
