DOWN (EAST), a parish in the hundred of Braunton, county of DEVON, 6¾ miles (S. by E.) from Barnstaple, containing 422 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £18. 3. 9., and in the patronage of the Rev. R.P. Coffin. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. At a place called Northcote are several stones, probably commemorative of some British heroes slain in battle.
