The author's intent was to provide an index through aggregating the titles of a number of books and pamphlets relating to the "history, antiquities and topography of the ancient city, including papers and articles that have appeared in the periodical literature of the county of Devon". In its preface, the hope is expressed that the index is "useful to those interested in the history of Exeter, and will be the means of inducing some more competent member of the Devonshire Association to compile a complete bibliography of this ancient city". Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use.
