The life of Sir Thomas Bodley, written by himself

London: John Lane Publishers (1894); Privately reprinted for John Lane and his friends. illus. pp. xvi; 16.

by

Sir Thomas Bodley

Prepared by Michael Steer

The book is a reprint of the original 1647 publication. Sometimes regarded as the first autobiography in English, and more recently cited as the forerunner of the modern political memoir, this autobiography is the fascinating account of a 16th century diplomat and founder of one of the most renowned libraries in the world. From Bodley's early education in Calvinist Switzerland to his studies at Oxford and his later career as one of Queen Elizabeth's elite ambassadors, this small book provides a rare look at the life of a thoroughly European Devonian. The rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the University of Michigan Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
