Trecentale Bodleianum: A memorial volume for the three hundredth anniversary
of the public funeral of Sir Thomas Bodley, March 12th, 1613

Oxford: Clarendon Press (1913), illus., pp. xii, 176.

Prepared by Michael Steer

Bodley was the son of an Exeter merchant and, with his Protestant father, was forced to flee to Geneva during the reign of Mary. In 1558 he entered Magdalen College, Oxford, and began an academic career during which he devoted himself to the study of Hebrew. He spent the late 1570s in Europe and acquired proficiency in modern languages. He was employed on various diplomatic missions in the 1580s but retired to Oxford in 1597 where he devoted himself to the re-establishment of the university library, which was reopened in 1602 and was later named the Bodleian Library in his honour. He was knighted by James I in 1603. The contents of the Memorial Volume are as follows:

  • The life of Sir Thomas Bodley written by himself, 1609
  • Letter from Sir Thomas to the Vice Chancellor offering to re-found the university library
  • Proposed statutes for the library
  • Extracts from Sir Thomas' Will that relate to the library
  • Two funeral orations; and an Appendix:
  • Bodley's letter to Sir Francis Bacon, 1608
  • Form of the commemoration service, 1913
