Sir Thomas Bodley
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 5 (1872), pp. 330-343.
by
Sir John Bowring
Prepared by Michael Steer
The son of an Exeter merchant, Thomas Bodley was educated at Geneva and Oxford. A gifted linguist, he served on a variety of diplomatic missions in Europe, retiring from public life in 1597. Eleven years previously he had married Ann, the widow of Nicholas Ball, a wealthy Totnes merchant, whose fortune (with that he had inherited from his father) enabled him to re-found the University Library in Oxford. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
